Whoever said Intelligence Operations are nothing like Bond flicks?
Lt. General Igor Kirillov was once the chief of the Russian military’s Nuclear Biological and Chemical department. (RKhBZ)
This morning, the late General Kirillov was killed near the Ryazansky Prospekt in Moscow.

The SBU, Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Directorate, has claimed direct responsibility for the operation, in which Ukrainian spies used an explosive concealed in an electric scooter propped up against the wall of an apartment building to make the hit.
As for motives, it’s worth noting General Kirillov would have been directly involved in deploying chemical weapons in Ukraine. I’m not even going to bother saying “allegedly” here, because Ukrainian troops have been hospitalized because of it and the RKhBZ is formally responsible for advising and coordinating the deployment of such weapons.
The UK even formally sanctioned Russia because of the activities of the RKhBZ after an investigation revealed they were using chemical weapons in Ukraine.
So far I can only find official proof of the Russians using “less lethal” chemical weapons to include teargas and choking agents. The “less lethal” nature of these agents is little comfort to those who were found suffocated to death in their trenches after exposure, or who got smoked out of their fighting positions only to be cut down by Russian machine guns.
Teargas and choking agents are how it all started in WW1. People didn’t think it was that bad at first, but the arms race that spiraled out of it ultimately lead to the most hellish scenes of the Great War. That’s why their use is taken so seriously even today.
Kirillov’s death is the latest in what’s become a spree of high level assassinations in Moscow by the Ukrainian intelligence service. From Kirillov to a military AI researcher and the infamous Russian “Torture General” Pavel Klimenko, Ukraine is making life difficult for the Bond villains of the world. Or, at least, for the Russian ones.
These guys seem super competent I’m sure it’ll be fine — CCZero Public Domain — Krassotkin
Top level entities of the Russian government have ordered an investigation, but despite video footage of suspects fleeing the attack they’ve got a pretty tough job cut out for them. I mean, their top guys have been dropping like dominos in an earthquake for months and they still haven’t caught even a single one of the Ukrainian spies responsible.
One has to wonder how long before they start pinning this on random people just to show their boss they’re not completely incompetent morons.*
Update: As of today the Russians have detained a random Uzbekistani man, tortured the hell out of him and gotten him to “confess” to having been recruited as a hitman by the Ukrainian SBU. Based on the track record of the FSB it is essentially a coin flip whether this is one of the actual assassins or just some guy they’re scapegoating.
* It is the considered opinion of Geostrategy Magazine that they are in fact completely incompetent morons.
