After an emotional outburst on National TV in response to an unfavorable budget report, the South Korean President Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol declared a state of Martial Law in the country, with Special Forces occupying the capital.

According to Mr. Yoon, the country had been overrun by North Korean sympathizers and “Anti-Democratic forces” whose villainous acts of sabotage had rendered government affairs unworkable.
When parliament called a vote on the matter, members of the opposition party were assaulted by the military for attempting to enter the capital to carry out their duties.
Many opposition members were ultimately allowed through by the military at the behest of crowds of protestors who helped them breach government lines. Military forces appeared disorganized and confused, unwilling to use lethal force against civilians.

Mr. Lee Jae-myung, leader of the South Korean opposition party, joined with the previous President in imploring the Military not to enforce Martial Law and went on to say that Mr. Yoon was “no longer the President of Korea” after he had “betrayed the people.”
Mr. Lee, an elderly gentleman, then live-streamed himself climbing a wall and infiltrating the Parliament building, evading Special Forces in order to reach the vote. This is not a joke, it’s not April 1st. This is real life and there’s video to back it up.
After Parliament finally managed to convene they voted 190 to 0 against Martial Law, rebuking the President’s actions. The Military insisted Martial Law would not be lifted without the President’s order, but after being unanimously voted down and publicly criticized by the former President, the opposition, and members of his own party, Mr. Yoon gave his consent to lift it.
These events come months after pro Yoon figures had mocked “baseless conspiracy theories” that the President had been considering implementing Martial Law. One of them said “Martial Law is not even a consideration”, while the Korean Herald said “conspiracies” about Martial Law were “unsupported.”
